Allure of the Seas Honduras Honeymoon Zip Line Death – On Thursday, July 5, 2018, Egael Tishman, 24, from Israel and his new bride Shif Fanken, 27, were on their honeymoon aboard Royal Caribbean Cruise Line (RCCL) cruise ship Allure of the Seas in Roatan, Honduras for a seven-night Western Caribbean cruise.
The couple who were married on Saturday June 30, booked an $89 per person, 3 hour zip line excursion, which was promoted by RCCL as “Extreme Caribe Zip Line Tour”.
Just before 1:30 pm Shif Fanken got stuck on the zip line amid the treetops, midway on the zip line. Egael Tishman came gliding down the zip line from behind, slamming into his bride. They were both injured during the collision. Two ambulances rushed to the site of the zip line, located in the French Harbor neighborhood.
Fanken was taken to a local hospital in serious condition and later flown to a hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she underwent surgery to stabilize her condition.
Royal Caribbean promotes this cruise ship excursion as, “Swoop above exotic plants, giant African Palms and beautiful landscapes. This Certified Extreme Caribe Zip Line has 12 zip lines, double gliding parallel cables, 18 platforms and 4 hiking trails. The longest cable is 1,950 feet and highest cable is 300 feet. You’ll receive your equipment and instructions before starting on the first three lines flying over trees and the breathtaking tropical scenery. The second part consists of nine lines that go through the jungle.”
Though, the zip line company alleges no wrong doing by their staff, having zip lined myself, on a similar multi cable zip line with a 2000 foot stretch, I know it’s standard procedure to hold people on the zip line platform, until the zip line is clear of other riders (as seen in Extreme Caribe Zip Line Tour video below). Something clearly went deadly wrong with internationally recognized, standard zip line safety procedures.
The newlywed couple suffered a number of serious injuries, including broken ribs. Both were still conscious when they arrived at the hospital. But soon after, Egael Tishman complained he could not breathe, suggesting he perhaps had one or more broken ribs which may have punctured this lungs. He was given oxygen, but died hours later.
On Friday, the Israeli Embassy in Guatemala was arranging to fly the husband’s body to Israel for burial.
Roatan is the largest of Honduras’s Bay Islands. The Bay Islands consist of eight islands and 53 small cays lying 10 miles to 40 miles off the northern coast of Honduras. Located on the Caribbean Sea, not far east of the entrance to the Gulf of Honduras, they are clearly visible from the mountainous mainland. The group is made up of the three large islands, Utila, Roatan, and Guanaja, and the smaller islands, or island groups, St. Helena, Barbareta, Morat, and, closest to the mainland, the two Hog Islands (Cayos Cochinos).
Allure of the Seas embarked from Ft Lauderdale, Florida on Sunday July 1, 2018. The ship then called at Nassau in the Bahamas before calling at Cozumel, Mexico, then Roatan. The ship arrived in Roatan at 0800 Hours on July 5 and departed at 5:00 pm. Allure of the Seas then sailed onto Costa Maya, Mexico, before returning to Ft. Lauderdale on Sunday, July 8.
NOTE: On a very similar Denali Zipline Tours, guests sign a release waiver of claims. However, that release doesn’t waive the responsibility of the zip line owners in a case of gross negligence resulting in death.
