At about 2100 hours on Tuesday March 6, 2018, Norwegian Cruise Line cruise ship Norwegian Epic was in the Bahamas on its final night at sea. In the pitch dark of night, an adult female passenger went overboard. She was reportedly taking a selfie on her cell phone.
Norwegian Epic crew launched a life boat to search the water around the ship. Using lights from the life boat and the ship, rescuers quickly found the passenger and pulled her to safety.
The passenger was brought back aboard the ship and evaluated by ship medical staff.
After the ship reached Port Canaveral, Brevard County Fire Rescue personnel transported the patient to a local hospital, Fire Chief Mark Schollmeyer said.
In their statement, Norwegian Cruise Line said, “We are thankful that our team reacted quickly and was able to rescue the guest. Our thoughts and prayers are with the guest and their family, as they embark on the recovery process and our CARE team is providing support and assistance during this time.”
Norwegian Epic was on a 4-day Bahamas cruises including stops at Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay. At the time ocean temperatures were 73°F-77°F (23°C).
