Winter Storm Kalani January 30, 2018. A broad shield of snow is falling from coastal New England to Long Island. Embedded in that area are snowbands with snowfall rates, at times, of 1 inch per hour. Already, over 6 inches of snow has fallen in central and eastern Long Island, including at the National Weather Service office in Upton, New York.
Heavier accumulations were also coming in from southeast New England, including 7.5 inches in West Greenwich, Rhode Island, and 5 inches in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Winds gusted to 53 mph at Woods Hole, Massachusetts and 50 mph on Nantucket Island just after midnight Tuesday.
Just over 1 inch of snow was reported at Boston’s Logan, JFK and LaGuardia Airports.
McKean, Pennsylvania, picked up 8 inches of snow, Edinboro, Pennsylvania, measured 7 inches of snow and Johnstown, Pennsylvania, reported 5 inches of snow. Snow-weary Erie, Pennsylvania, reported 4 to 5 inches of snow on the ground as of early Tuesday. Some 2 to 3 inch snow totals were reported in southern New Jersey.
A light dusting of snow was reported in parts of the Baltimore and Raleigh-Durham metro areas, mainly on grassy areas.
After the snow there will be a cold front tonight making the roads icy and dangerous.
