On November 30, 2017, Carnival was welcomed back to tropical paradise Puerto Rico (see video below). Hurricane Maria was regarded as the worst natural disaster on record in Dominica and Puerto Rico, and caused catastrophic damage and triggered a major humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico. The tenth-most intense Atlantic hurricane on record and the most intense tropical cyclone worldwide.
Tropical Storm Maria was named on the morning of September 16. Hurricane Maria rapidly intensified on September 18, with Maria achieving Category 5 status just 15 miles east-southeast of Dominica. Maria made landfall in Dominica on September 19, becoming the first Category 5 hurricane on record to strike the island nation.
Additional strengthening took place as the storm tracked northwest toward Puerto Rico. Maria attained its peak intensity around on September 20, roughly 30 mi south of St. Croix. Sustained winds reached 175 mph. making it the strongest to hit the island since the 1928 San Felipe Segundo hurricane.
Maria made landfall just south of Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, around 10:15 UTC with sustained winds of 155 mph.
The recovery effort has been on going. On November 30, 2017, the first Carnival Cruise Line cruise ship Carnival Conquest called in Puerto Rico.
