Diogo Penalva, 21, from Lisbon, Portugal, a Finance and Accounting student at the ISCTE Business School at Tallinn University of Technology in Estonia, disappeared from Silja Line cruise ship Silja Serenade cruise on Monday November 13, 2017 at 0200 hours, while the cruise ship was sailing in the Baltic Sea.
Penalva was aboard the Silja Serenade cruise ship in the early hours of November 13 when he allegedly fell from the ship after leaving one of its discos. Silja Serenade runs between Helsinki, the capital of Finland, and Stockholm, the capital of Sweden.
Silja Serenade Captain Martin Berghäll searched the Baltic for Penalva, as did the Coast Guard of Finland, using two helicopters (one Finnish and one Swedish), as well as four passenger ships, for about three and a half hours. The next day, the searches were resumed, with a plane from the Finland Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard of Finland warns that such accidents are frequent in the area where the young Portuguese disappeared. In the last 10 years, there have been 39 such accidents.
“The father of the Portuguese citizen is receiving support from the Portuguese diplomatic authorities in Helsinki, namely in terms of remaining in contact with Finnish authorities which are investigating this case,” a Finish government source has said.
