While wandering around Astoria, Oregon on Saturday, September 23, 2017, we stopped by the cruise port and were excited to see Royal Caribbean Cruise Line’s cruise ship Explorer of the Seas docked at the cruise pier. (see video below)
According to our Cruise Port Schedule for Astoria Oregon, Explore of the Seas was to be in port from 0900 hours until 1800 hours.
Typically, only smaller cruise ships call at Astoria, so it was a real treat to see Explore of the Seas docked.
Smaller cruise ships calling at Astoria in September and throughout the year included the American Pride. The American Pride paddle wheeler cruises the Columbia and Snake Rivers.
Also calling at Astoria are American Cruise Lines’ Queen of the West and American Empress, as well as Un-Cruises’ SS Legacy. The SS Legacy (former Spirit of ’98) is a replica 1898 coastal gold rush steamer, with Victorian-style décor, and modern machinery.
Larger cruise ships calling at Astoria this month include Oceania Cruises’ cruise ship Regatta, Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Mariner, Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Infinity, Princess Cruises’ Coral Princess and Emerald Princess and Holland America Line’s Oosterdam. During October, several Princess Cruises’ ships and Holland America Line ships will be calling at Astoria as well.
Explorer of the Seas had been sailing itineraries to Alaska during the summer. According to our Explorer of the Seas cruise ship schedule, she embarked from San Francisco, California at 0800 hours on Monday, September 25, calling at Victoria, British Columbia, Canada , then calling at Seattle, Washington and Astoria, Oregon before returning to San Francisco. Explorer of the Seas was scheduled to make three calls at Astoria this month, September 16 , 23 and 30.
Explorer of the Seas will be re-positioning in October with a cruise to Hawaii from Seattle, Washington. From there she will sail the south Pacific from Sydney in New South Wales, Australia with regular calls at ports in Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Mystery Island and Loyalty Islands.
A local harbor excursion tour while in port at Astoria, can give passengers a memorable and fascinating view of the hundreds of sea lions who call Astoria, Oregon harbor their home. The sea lions enjoy lounging in the East Mooring Basin near the Columbia River Maritime Museum, both of which are located east of the cruise dock on the Columbia River. The museum and sea lions are popular with those passengers who have a cruise port call in Astoria.
