Danielle was 520 mi (835 km) west-southwest of Cabo Verde when the system got organized into a tropical storm. She became Hurricane Danielle the next day.
By August 26, the hurricane had become a category 4 major hurricane with winds of 130 mph (215 km/h).

High surf and seas resulted in the rescue of 250 people in Ocean City, Maryland and an additional 70 people off the coast of Central Florida.
