At 16:56 CEST Thursday August 17, 2017, (see video below) a terror attack on the cruise port city of Barcelona, Spain killed at least 14 people and reportedly injured 130 others from 34 countries, which include the U.S and Canada.
At the time of the attack, four cruise ships were in port at Barcelona; AIDA Cruises AIDALaura, P&O Cruises Britannia, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines Brilliance of the Seas and Thomson Cruises TUI Discovery.
A white Fiat Talento van was driven onto the pavement of Barcelona’s La Rambla, crashing into pedestrians for about 550 metres (1,800 ft) between Plaça de Catalunya and Liceu and stopping on a Joan Miró mosaic.
Moroccan Younes Abouyaaqoub, driver of the white Fiat van, was one of the suspects of the Barcelona and Cambrils attacks. Others involved are allegedly Moussa Oukabir, Said Aallaa and Mohamed Hychami.
There are numerous reports which state most major cruise lines will continue to call at Barcelona despite Thursday’s terror attack. At press time, there has been no indication any of those injured or murdered were cruise ship passengers.
American Jared Tucker, 42, San Francisco bay area community Lafayette, California, was a father of three children and a newlywed. Tucker was killed during the attack.
Canadian pensioner Ian Moore Wilson was also murdered during the terror attack. Wilson was the proud father of Vancouver police officer Staff Sergeant Fiona Wilson. Ian Wilson was described by his daughter as a compassionate, generous and adventurous person.
Cruise Ship Passengers Murdered By Terrorists
On January 6, 2017, at Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport, five cruise ship passengers were murderer by an American terrorist. The passengers were arriving to the cruise port for cruises to the Caribbean.
A little more than two years ago, on March 18, 2015, the worst massacre of cruise ship passengers in history took place at the Bardo National Museum in Tunis, Tunisia. The terror attack resulted in more than 50 cruise ship passengers being killed or injured. The passengers were on an excursion from cruise ships MSC Splendida and Costa Fascinosa.
In the aftermath, Tunisia was closed as a cruise ship port, when cruise lines refused to call at the port cancelling all future calls. A year and half later, cruise ships began to call at the port again in October 2016. The first ship to call was the Hapag-Lloyd cruise ship MS Europa.
On July 12, 1988, the cruise ship City of Poros was attacked by terrorist. Eleven passengers were murdered.
On October 8, 1985, the cruise ship Achille Lauaro was attack by terrorists. One passenger, Leon Klinghoffer was murdered in this wheelchair and tossed overboard.
