Twice so far in 2017, violence as erupted for cruise ship passengers arriving to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. This is the airport of choice, for cruise ship passengers scheduled to embark from Port Everglades, Florida. Cruise passengers embark for cruises to the Bahamas cruise ship tracker and Caribbean cruise ship tracker regions.
On January 6, 2017, at approximately 12:56 p.m., Esteban Santiago aka Aashiq Hammad, from Anchorage, Alaska, 26, exited exited the restroom and began shooting airline passengers in the Terminal 2 baggage claim area of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, killing four cruise ship passengers.
Two cruise ships were docked at Port Everglades at the time, Holland America Line’s Nieuw Amsterdam and Princess Cruises’ Caribbean Princess. Carnival Conquest, Coral Princess, Eurodam, Harmony of the Seas and Freedom of the Seas were scheduled to dock at the port the next day.
Victims were brought to Broward Health Medical Center. Four of the five dead were cruise ship passengers. The dead were Michael Oehme, 57, Olga Woltering, 84, Shirley Timmons, 70, and Terry Andres, 62.
Yesterday, a brawl erupted in the airport after about 300 Spirit Airlines flights were canceled, leaving thousands of passengers angry. The airline says its own pilots are behind the cancellations and is suing them in federal court. Police arrested three passengers and detained another (video).
This is the third major incident to hit the region in the past year. On June 12, 2016, Omar Mateen killed 49 people and wounded 53 others in the deadliest terrorist shooting rampage in modern U.S. history at the gay nightclub, Pulse in Orlando,Florida.
