2017 Atlantic Tropical Storm Arlene Named

The first tropical storm of the 2017 hurricane season has been name. Friday, April 21 Tropical Storm Arlene was named.  While the storm posed no threat to land, nor cruise ships, it has been a wake-up call that the hurricane season is arriving early in recent years.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through November 30.  We cover the storms in real time at CruiseShipWeather. com and provide this information for the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea,  Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean.

The tropical storm names for 2017  are Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Don, Emily, Franklin, Gert, Harvey, Irma, Jose, Katia, Lee, Maria, Nate, Ophelia, Philippe, Rina,Sean, Tammy, Vince and Whitney.

In 2016, Hurricane Alex which formed in the Northeastern Atlantic, developed on January 12, five months before the official start of the season. It was the earliest hurricane of the season since Hurricane Alice in 1955. When the storms are named, we cover them here on the Cruise Ship Wave Network blog. Follow our blog for storm updates and other relevant cruise industry news.

In 2016, we went live numerous times during Hurricane Matthew, after everyone else evacuated. We watched and filmed on our balcony as Hurricane Matthew came ashore in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, even after we lost power. Our live Hurricane Matthew videos, and the after math videos were posted to our public Facebook Group.  One video of note you will see, was early during Matthew, right after the power went out on October 8, 2016,  the automatic doors in our lobby began opening and closing like they were possessed, with a witch frantically flying on her broom.

We also have live real time coverage as it happens, which  can be found on our Cruise Ship Atlantic Ocean Live Hurricane Cyclone Forecast page. This page is automatically updated by NOAA, so you see it has it happens, before any news station reports it, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We have many people around the world who have made home page, our Cruise Ship Weather page they prefer the most.

Cruise Ship Weather also has historical data on previous storms in the Atlantic, Caribbean and Pacific oceans. We have the historical Atlantic Ocean Storm Tracks, Caribbean Storm Tracks, Gulf of Mexico Fueled H5 Hurricanes 1900-2015 and much more historical trend graphics.

Cruise Passengers Left Die in Nassau Bahamas

While browsing videos for Nassau, Bahamas today, one particular video caught my eye. The video was titled “Cabbage beach Nassau Bahamas unsafe. I needed to know more and the 15 minute video outlines a day in port for two cruise ship passengers who were “left to die”. So, naturally, it came under investigation by Cruise Bruise Investigates. This is what the investigation of the video turned up.

Debra and Richard Bontempt from Doyleston, Ohio took a Carnival Cruise Lines’  Carnival Elation Bahamas cruise from Jacksonville, Florida on Saturday, September 10, 2016. The cruise ship called at Nassau, Bahamas on September 12, then at Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas the next day.

The couple disembark the cruise ship in Nassau, dine, go to shop at the Straw Market to buy things for their four kids and want to put their feet in the sand. They change into their swimsuits.

A tropical disturbance had come off the coast of Africa, so there was the threat of poor weather and it had begun to rain. Tropical Storm Julia was forming that day in the Bahamas, but it was only a disturbance at that time. The next day, Tropical Storm Julia was named, while it was off the Florida coast.

The couple asked where there was a beach and are told about Cabbage Beach, a beautiful beach with postcard perfect, pink sands, near million dollar homes. They take a taxi to the beach.

They are pitched by locals repeatedly for excursions and goods they sell. She claims one of the men were more or less stalking them to pitch their goods.

Debra says the crime rate is not as reported, it is very dangerous there. She outlines the reasons she calls the port “unsafe” in her video.

She says they got talked into renting a jet ski for an hour to get away from the men “stalking them”. From there, things went wrong.

The jet ski broke down and they were stranded after the current pushes them out to the coral reef a mile or two from shore. She gets cut on her legs and feet in “shark infested waters”.

A second cruise ship from Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines has departed the port, leaving just Carnival Elation. They begin to think they are going to miss the cruise ship departure. (you can track  Carnival Elation with our live cruise ship tracker)

The couple attempt to swim back to shore. With the tide coming in, the jet ski getting ripped apart on the reef, they are in danger of not getting back and she is endanger of drowning, as they fight the tide. They lose sight of each other, choking on the sea water washing over them. She is tired and having a hard time getting to shore. She says they were “left to die”. Ultimately, a fishing boat rescues them and takes them back to shore and the cruise ship.

She faults the town for not having more security in the port and on the beach which could have prevented them from being so desperate to get away from the men pitching their goods and services, they took a jet ski to get away from them. Bontempt tells her story in the video below, “to warn others”.  Listen to her story and you decide.

Winter Storm Stella Cruise Ship Port Weather Outlook

Winter Storm Stella Graphics

Winter Storm Stella Graphics

Our Cruise Ship Weather website is following the progress of Winter Storm Stella in the Northeast United States cruise ship ports. For March 14 to March 18, 2017.

The four square weather graphic on this page shows the New York City and Bayonne, New Jersey radar, Boston Massachusetts radar and Portland, Maine radar.  The weather graphic bottom right shows the Atlantic Wind Speeds.

Winter storms can bring snow, sleet, and freezing rain across the entire United States and its territories. Even Hawaii gets snow in its Big Island, and major cities as far south as Atlanta and Dallas have been paralyzed by snow, ice.

Blizzards occur when strong wind causes blowing snow and whiteout conditions, making roads impassable. Thousands of people are injured or killed every year in traffic accidents related to slippery roads from winter storms.

What Defines A Blizzard?

Officially, the National Weather Service defines a blizzard as a storm which contains large amounts of snow OR blowing snow, with winds in excess of 35 mph and visibility of less than 1/4 mile for an extended period of time (at least 3 hours).

Cruise Ship Hoverboard Banned By Some Not All Cruise Lines

Advice to passengers who want to take their hoverboard on a cruise – leave it at home. Hoverboards have been identified as a fire risk, making them a danger to cruise ships.

The US airline industry has banned hoverboards from flights aboard American, Alaska, Delta, Hawaiian, JetBlue, Southwest and United Airlines.

The hoverboards have become so risky for air travel,   The United States Postal Service has stopped shipping hoverboards by air as well.

Amazon and Target both temporarily suspended sales, and has stopped selling hoverboards at all.

The devices’ rechargeable lithium-ion cells contain a potentially flammable solution, which can explode if the battery is damaged, defective or overcharged.

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Issued a press statement over a year ago on January 20, 2016. “CPSC is looking into dozens of fires involving hoverboards, which are also called smart boards or self-balancing boards. Many of these fires occurred indoors and could have resulted in serious injuries if not for the quick actions of consumers to extinguish the fire. This is a priority investigation and CPSC is devoting the staff time and resources necessary to find the root causes of the fires.”

For more than a year, the writing has been on the wall, as reports of fires have been increasing. On March 10, 2017, an “off-brand hoverboard”  caused a home fire, killing Ashanti Hughes, 3, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Her two sisters are in critical condition.

Hoverboard banning by businesses and colleges has increased December 2015.

Princess Cruises, Holland America Line and Disney Cruise Line all identify the hoverboard as a prohibited item, but not due to fire risk. They fall into the roller blade, Segway, Heely Shoes, bicycle category for mobility on the cruise ship.

Though Carnival Cruise Lines, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines do not specifically identify them as prohibited. Technically, if you drive to the port, you could pack a hoverboard to use at other ports during the cruise. But, given the video below, why would you?

USCG Says Cruise Ship Captain Fell Asleep Before Crash

On Thursday, August 28, 2016 around 0230 hours,  Entertainment Cruises’ Spirit of Baltimore was involved in a collision in at Henderson Wharf Marina Fells Point Maryland. The cruise ship had taken more than 400 passengers on a Saturday Spirit After Dark Moonlight Cruise along the Patapsco River.

There were 412 passengers and 35 employees aboard at the time of the collision. Two passenger were reportedly injured enough to be taken to a local hospital.

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) has completed their investigation and determined the cause of the accident was due to the captain falling asleep at the helm. Court documents say he had worked three days in a row “on his own boat”, long hours and he was known to get sleepy when working overnight.  He was suspended after the incident then terminated.

A lawsuit was filed on December 29, 2016 requesting a jury trial,  with 30 passengers party to the complaint. One couple, Maurice and Tonya Franklin are demanding one million dollars in damages in Maryland United States District Court case. Other claimants are asking for $5,000, $30,000, $50,000 or $75,000.

It is interesting to note, the lawsuit complaint says that at the time of the incident, crew only received injury reports from six passengers, with two of those requesting medical treatment.  The lawsuit further says, the cruise ship was travelling at 3 knots per hour (3.445 mph)at the time of the accident.

After the USCG published the cause of the accident and the original litigants published the required court notice in the Baltimore Sun newspaper and the complainants flooded in to add their names to the cases.

Ellen L. Hollander United States District Judge has ruled the total value of the complaint for all injuries can total no more than the value of the cruise ship, which is $1,850,000, according to Exhibit A, attached to the complaint.

While there are numerous lawyers involved in the case, Sumayyah Abdul-Hamid, Latisha Charise Morris and Nakenya Laruth Thomas are all represented by the same attorney; Devon Hogue and George Vaughn share one attorney; Antonio Bolar, Latanya Y. Dawson, Gregory A. Jones and Patrice Rooks all share one attorney are all three are listed as both defendants and claimants.

Wheelchair Cruise Passenger Books Accessible Cabin Carnival Screws Up

In December 2016, Jade of J5 Aerial Photography embarked on a Carnival Cruise Lines’ Baja Mexico 4-night cruise aboard Carnival Imagination.  Jade is a vblogger who takes videos on his trips and he also brings his Phantom drone, getting aerial photography on his trips as well.  He posts “The Jade Vblog” under the Youtube user name MixTape51 or J5 aerial photography.

Jade is from Phoenix, Arizona and drove five hours to embark the cruise from Long Beach, California.  Jade is in a wheelchair and had booked a handicap accessible cabin to enable his wheel chair easy access through the cabin door and easier access into the cabin restroom. But, as he approached the assigned cabin door, it was clear the cabin was not accessible for this wheelchair.

Jade went to the customer service front desk to complain about the cabin he was booked into. He spoke with Tim who told him the cruise ship was fully booked, but after the ship left port they would see what they could do for him.

Jade browses the cruise ship and finally gets word there is an accessible cabin available and he settles into  the accessible cabin, giving us a tour. He thought the matter was resolved and he was pleased. But, the issue was far from over.

Carnival Imagination anchors off shore from Catalina Island, California and he tenders ashore in his wheelchair, getting some drone footage of the island and has a meal at the Bluewater Avalon Seafood Restaurant where he dines on scallops.

Back aboard the cruise ship, Jade give us more good information. Jade requires a gluten-free diet and is pleased there are good choices aboard the cruise ship for his special diet, including gluten-free Mexican food.

As the cruise ship sails towards Ensenada, Mexico, Jade dines at Carnival Imagination’s American Table and orders the Escargot Bourguignonne, giving us a review of the meal.

After dinner he goes back his cabin and a surprise is waiting for him inside. Tim from Customer Service has comped him a beautiful fruit basket ($28.00), a chilled bottle of champagne ($28.75) and a tray of chocolate covered strawberries ($12.50), as a result of the inconvenience he faced after he boarded the cruise ship with an improper cabin assignment.  Way to go Tim!

Carnival Imagination sails onto Ensenada and Jade hopes to launch his drone here, as he did on Catalina Island. Someone immediately comes over to him on the dock and tells him the Federales will shoot it down without warning. So, instead he takes a takes video of the port with his cell.

We featured this vblogger video today, because it shows sometimes things are not quite as expected on  a cruise ship. But, in this case Carnival quickly corrected the issue and went the extra mile to ensure Jade was satisfied with their customer service at the end of the day.

Cruise ship aircraft carrier wonky wonkier wonkiest solutions for housing homeless

Greg Gopman, of AngelHack,

Greg Gopman, of AngelHack,

Tech entrepreneur Greg Gopman, of AngelHack, a company which organizes hackathons, complained on Facebook in 2013 (seen on his website titled, The Stupidest Thing I Ever Did) about the “homeless, drug dealers, dropouts, and trash, the degenerates gather like hyenas, spit, urinate, taunt you, there is nothing positive gained from having them so close to us.”, recently wanted to house the homeless on a cruise ship.

Gopman’s website welcomes visitor with this message, “Hi, I’m Greg Gopman, I’m most well known for my work building AngelHack, and for my work solving homeless in San Francisco. I’m an avid traveler, lover of unconventional wisdom, and usually have 2- 3 wonky ideas I’m working on.”

On his blog, he had posted on May 8, 2015, ” A New Solution to Housing the Homeless, The way America deals with homelessness is broken. Every year, cities spend more to try and manage homelessness at a local level, and every year they come up short. In the past 8 years, US spending on homelessness has doubled, yet homelessness itself has only decreased by 10%.”

Wonky Trifecta

A New Solution to Housing the Homeless,

A New Solution to Housing the Homeless

So, Gopman brain-stormed a plan to house the homeless on a cruise ship in San Francisco. He lays out the reason the homeless should be housed on a cruise ship, “Now you might be wondering: would people really want to live somewhere else? Maybe… maybe not. But it’s an option we should be offering. Currently, the only option we offer people is to stay homeless. Or worse, we put people in jail for being homeless.”

Gopman had started a petition two years ago on The petition states he was trying to get 100 signatures and received 32 before it was closed. It appeared to be primarily promoted via his blog. That was ultimately the publicity problem with the AngelHack founder’s petition.

Gopman challenges his readers, “That’s why it’s time to make a change! If you want to support a regional housing solution, sign our campaign below. If 30,000 people sign up, then A Better San Francisco will organize a Regional Housing Summit for California and assist the mayors of the thirty cities below to organize one as well.”

The long-winded blog post had two big orange buttons at the bottom of the blog post. For a man who considers himself a tech, tech enough to hold hackathons, it is sloppy at minimum,  that the links on the buttons were improperly formatted and would not work. The button links were formatted to go to this web address, which of course is not a web address at all.

Bad html button link

Bad html button link

This was indeed a trifecta effect cluster of his “wonky” ideas. First,  was the Facebook post slamming the homeless, second  to create this webpage petition promotion which was flawed  tech code,  but the big Kahuna was suggesting to house homeless on a cruise ship.

Wonky Defined: crooked; off-center; askew;(of a thing) unsteady; shaky; not functioning correctly; faulty.

Gopman’s website says he has a hackathon going on today: Sony Xperia Projector Hackathon, held March 3-4, 2017 at Museum of the African Diaspora, 685 Mission Street, San Francisco, CA 94105.

The idea of using a cruise ship to house the homeless is not new. Right before Thanksgiving on November 21, 2002 the Los Angeles Times published an article New York Floats a Plan to Place Homeless on Board Cruise Ship, which floated this same idea.

“City officials, faced with a rapidly expanding number of homeless and a court order that requires New York to provide temporary shelter for any person who needs it, have come up with the novel plan to use old cruise ships as just one of several solutions to a chronic housing shortage.”

Years later, there was a new twist to the cruise ship idea. On September 7, 2016 CBS San Francisco published an article which stated, “former San Francisco Mayor Art Agnos pitched a solution to the city’s homeless crisis that would get people in need off the streets and onto a ship. Agnos wanted to turn an old aircraft carrier, the USS Peleliu, into temporary housing for the homeless.”

Filed under: wonky, wonkier, wonkiest ideas for housing the homeless.

Great Idea Helping Homeless

Now, a really great idea. On March 16, 2009, the Ship to Shelter Program Port of San Diego and Holland America Line was kicked off.

The Great Amazon River Reef Endangered By Oil Drilling

The reef is Located near the mouth of the Amazon River near Macapa,in the State of Amapa in northeastern Brazil. The size of the reef is about 3,668 square miles and is between 164 and 328 feet deep.

We found a reef where the textbooks said there shouldn’t be one,” study co-author Fabiano Thompson of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro told National Geographic.

The BBC reports that licensing processes for oil exploration in the area are already happening. Citing the constant risk of an oil spill as one possible environmental repercussion if drilling happens there, Greenpeace has started a campaign to protect the reef.

Greenpeace launched a submarine from their ship Esperanza which took the photos. Greenpeace is currently in the region for the “Defend the Amazon Reef” campaign that the advocacy organization has started.

Greenpeace says, “A team of experts, including several oceanographers who announced the discovery of the reef last year, have joined the Greenpeace ship Esperanza on an expedition to document this new biome, which runs from French Guyana to the Brazilian state of Maranhão, an area larger than the cities of São Paulo or London. Oil companies Total and BP could start drilling in this area if they obtain authorization from the Brazilian government.”

The team were searching in a submarine launched from the Esperanza at 220 a metre depth, more than 100 kilometres far from the Brazilian coast, when the reef came into view for the first time.

There is a Care2 Petition to stop oil drilling near the reef, “Stop Oil Drilling Near Discovered Amazon River Coral Reef”. The petition has a goal of 9,000 signatures and as of today has 8,359.

You can sign the petition here The petition states, the following: Scientists have just made an incredible discovery: A flourishing coral reef the size of Delaware near the base of the Amazon River’s mouth in Brazil. The reef stretches approximately 3,700 square miles and is home to “beautiful, colorful reef animals” — some species may have just been discovered.

Sadly, the reef is already under attack by big oil. As the Los Angeles Times reports, the researchers of the study also noted: “In the past decade, a total of 80 exploratory blocks have been acquired for oil drilling in the study region, 20 of which are already producing,” the study authors wrote. “These blocks will soon be producing oil in close proximity to the reefs.” The study authors go on to recommend that these oil companies complete “a more social-ecological assessment.”

Oil exploration in the Amazon rain forest is already a big problem. One estimate says that oil exploration covers a section of the Amazon rainforest comparable to the size of Germany. In this unstable time of global coral reef decline caused by climate change and ocean acidification, we can’t afford toxic contaminants, like lead and cadmium, to harm the Amazon reef’s ecosystem.

The CRS-10 Falcon 9 rocket was launched from pad 39a at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Sunday, February 19, 2017 at 9:39 a.m. EST, as passengers began disembarking.

The launch was across the channel from Cape Canaveral and could be seen by passengers and crew aboard Disney Wonder, Carnival Sunshine and Carnival Liberty as well as Oasis of the Seas.

10 minutes after launch, the first stage of the rocket – the part that gives it enough power to get off the ground – had flown back to land, touching down at SpaceX’s Landing Zone 1 pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force.

Space X expects to launch another reusable recovered rocket as early as October to test whether they work as well the second time around.
